 GRADING POLICY
The administration and faculty of HCS seek to measure total student performance in class work, homework, evaluative testing performance, class participation, and when appropriate, work on special projects.  Therefore, written grades will be given to keep students and parents aware of performance.  We are concerned that students do their best and we want them to work up to their academic capacity level.

                                                                  




























HOMEWORK
The purpose of homework is to develop study habits, to provide reinforcement, and to give opportunity for enrichment. To establish the proper study habits, homework may be expected in HCS classes.

There will be little homework for Kindergarten students outside of reading assignments and incomplete classroom work. In all other grades, homework will be assigned for remedial work, makeup work, incomplete classroom work, or additional drills. To strengthen a certain subject or skill, we ask that parents work consistently with the child at home in the area that needs strengthening and improvement.

We do believe that homework is an integral part of the school program and each teacher is at liberty to give homework to aid the student to advance in his or her studies. Therefore, each student is required to complete his or her homework on time. Homework is given for several reasons:

Reinforcement: We believe that most students require solid drilling to master material essential to their educational process.

Practice: Following explanation, illustration, and drill on new work, homework is given so that the material can be mastered.

Remedial activity: As instruction progresses, various weak points in a student’s grasp of a subject becomes evident.  Homework
following the instruction is given to overcome such difficulties.

Special projects: Book reports, compositions, special research assignments, and projects are some activities that are frequently
the subject of homework attention.

We do request parents full cooperation in seeing that the assignments are completed. Repeated delinquent homework could result in a student’s failure. The home has the responsibility to assist the student by providing a place and time conducive to study which will allow concentration and absence of distractions. Parents should not do the work for the child, but should encourage and supervise so that the student will complete the assignment.

For any student, homework prudently assigned and carefully executed can be considered as preparation for the type of work demanded in successive years. We urge all parents to take an active interest in the child’s homework.  It is the responsibility of the STUDENT to see that assignments are properly written down and are completed on time.  All students are expected to contact the teacher if problems arise.  We ask that parents monitor their child’s efforts in that regard.

Be sure to check your child’s backpacks and folders each evening for notes, assignments, etc. that need your immediate attention.

Many notes/papers, including homework, need to have a parent’s signature and returned to school.  Please check ALL communication regarding papers that need a parent’s signature.  It is important that the student accepts the responsibility of bringing homework to school on the day required by the teacher.
ALL TESTS MUST BE SIGNED AND RETURNED TO THE TEACHER.

HONOR ROLL

At the end of each report card period, the teachers submit a list of students eligible to be posted on the honor roll.

PROGRESS REPORTS/REPORT CARDS

At the end of each grading period, report cards will be distributed.  A formal parent-teacher conference will accompany the first and third quarter report cards.

Progress reports are sent home each quarter automatically.   Parents may request a teacher conference any time there is a need or the teacher recognizes a need.  Informal contact by note, telephone, or a visit is welcomed with the reminder that arrangements should be made in advance for a visit with the teacher.

There is a charge for each duplicate report card issued.


PROMOTION

All students are expected to achieve at least grade level proficiency to merit promotion to the next grade. Teacher evaluation and standardized test scores are reviewed to form the basis of the decision.

ROOM PARENTS

Each classroom has volunteer room mothers who work with the teacher in planning parties, special occasions, and cooperating in school-sponsored field trips and special projects.
